THE EFFECT OF A RESEARCH METHODS COURSE ON THE ATTITUDES TOWARDS RESEARCH AMONG PRE-SERVICE ENGLISH TEACHERS

dc.descriptionResearch skills are considered to be an integral part ofteacher education. However, how to teach research and how teaching practicesinfluence attitudes towards research are underresearched areas within the fieldof teacher education. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of acompulsory research methods course given in the second year of an EnglishLanguage Teaching (ELT) department at a public university in Turkey. Anembedded mixed methods design was used to find out how the course influencedresearch attitudes and how it was perceived by 46 2nd year undergraduatestudents of ELT. A psychometric scale was used to measure attitudes towardsresearch before and after the course. An open-ended questionnaire was alsoutilized for the evaluation of the course by the participants. The resultsindicated a decreasing trend in the attitudes towards research. The findingsimply that increasing the course hours and decreasing the number of take-hometasks are needed for more positive attitudes towards research among the participants.
dc.descriptionAraştırma becerileri öğretmen eğitiminin bileşenlerinden biriolarak görülmektedir. Ancak, araştırma yöntemlerinin öğretilmesi ve öğretimpratiklerinin araştırma tutumu üzerindeki etkileri öğretmen eğitiminin azçalışılan alanları arasındadır. Bu nedenle, bu çalışma Türkiye’de bir devletüniversitenin İngilizce Öğretmenliği bölümünün ikinci yılında zorunlu olarakverilen bir araştırma yöntemleri dersinin etkilerini değerlendirmeyiamaçlamaktadır. Dersin araştırma tutumlarını etkileme biçimlerini ve 46 adetikinci sınıf İngilizce Öğretmenliği öğrencisi tarafından nasıl algılandığınıincelemek amacıyla gömülü karma desen kullanılmıştır. Araştırmaya yöneliktutumların dersin öncesinde ve sonrasında ölçülmesi için psikometrik birölçekten yararlanılmıştır. Öğrencilerin dersi değerlendirmesi için ise açıkuçlu bir anket kullanılmıştır. Sonuçlar, dersin sonunda öğrencilerin araştırmatutumlarında azalma olduğunu göstermektedir. Çalışmanın bulguları, araştırmayakarşı olumlu tutum geliştirilebilmesi için ders saatinin artırılması ve evödevlerinin azaltılması gerekliliğini ortaya çıkarmıştır.
